Thesis and Dissertation Guidelines and Approval

Students who need to have the format of their thesis or dissertation approved by the Reference Librarian should come to the Reference Desk during Reference Desk hours. During the week before the filing deadline, every attempt will be made to have a Reference Librarian on duty during all Reference Desk hours, but at other times you may wish to call ahead, particularly if you are on a tight schedule.

Students are welcome to call the Reference Desk at any time with questions, and you are welcome to have the Reference Librarian look over a draft of your thesis/dissertation before submitting the final copy.

Click here for the formatting guidelines (PDF). Be sure to use the approved paper and double-check your margins.

Note: the formatting instructions apply to theses/dissertations for all programs at the GTU, except for JST-SCU. However, filing instructions are for the GTU Common M.A. and Ph.D. programs only. For filing procedures for other degrees, check with your school.

JST-SCU students must refer to the graduate thesis policy for Santa Clara University.

Thesis/Dissertation Binding

The GTU Library contracts with the Trappist Abbey Bookbindery for all its books and periodicals, as well as the theses/dissertations submitted to the library.  The library does not send personal thesis/dissertation copies for binding.  Students wanting personal copies bound can contact the bindery directly for cost and instructions.
