The Graduate Theological Union and the Center for the Arts, Religion, and Education are excited to announce a new partnership with the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. As part of this partnership, a group of GTU faculty members will host a panel discussion following an upcoming performance of Head of Passes, a new play by MacArthur Genius award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney that is based in part on the Book of Job.

In the last week people have taken to the streets across the nation to protest against repeated incidents of unarmed black and brown citizens being killed by police officers. This injustice within our law-enforcement and legal system has triggered personal and public pain, indignation, and a nationwide call for accountability. Members of the Graduate Theological Union community, including faculty, students, staff, and alumni, have been among the thousands here in Berkeley who have lifted their voices and engaged in nonviolent protests to call public attention to the destructive impact of racism within the criminal justice system and in our larger society.

After receiving her doctoral degree at the GTU this fall, Mee-Yin Mary Yuen (PhD, ’14) returned home to Hong Kong, where she recently wrote about the pro-democracy efforts of the student-led “Umbrella Movement” in her country. In a potent and concise article for AsiaNews entitled, “Justice and Peace: Occupy Central increases the Dignity and Political Consciousness of Hong Kong,” Yuen documents the critical moments in this unfolding event before summarizing how Catholic social teachings relate to and even encourage participation in the protests.

Mary Jo Potter has served on the Graduate Theological Union’s board of trustees since 2008, and has been a faithful supporter of both the GTU Annual Fund and the GTU Endowment for more than a decade. She has more than 25 years of work experience in the healthcare, technology, and professional services industries. We recently asked Mary Jo to tell us a little bit more about herself, and why she donates both her time and money to the Graduate Theological Union.
