BERKELEY, CA – On May 17, the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) and Pacific School of Religion (PSR) informed their communities that Dr. Riess W. Potterveld, PSR President, will become Acting President of the GTU. PSR is one of the oldest members of the GTU, which is the largest consortium of seminaries and graduate schools in the country. Many of the schools are concentrated in an area north of UC Berkeley known as “Holy Hill.”

President Nick Carter of Andover Newton Theological School and Rabbi Eric Gurvis of Temple Shalom of Newton recently announced that Dr. Jennifer Peace (Ph.D. '05), Assistant Professor at Andover Newton, and Father Raymond Helmick, S.J. of Boston College, will share the 2013 Rabbi Murray I. Rothman Award for outstanding interreligious leadership.

The Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology (DSPT) sent representatives to Mexico to join top Mexican intellectuals for conversations examining political, economic, and social assumptions at work in Mexico and the U.S. in the first annual Mazatlán Forum.

Recently, Naomi Seidman, Director of the Center for Jewish Studies, traveled to Warsaw in commemoration of the uprising and the publication of her father's diary into Polish. Upon her return, the j profiled the important work her father did. An excerpt follows:
“My father was the archivist of the pre-war Warsaw Jewish community,” Seidman said in an interview. “He wrote in Polish, Hebrew and Yiddish, and was a Ph.D. of Jewish history.”

Jung Eun "Sophia" Park, S.N.J.M. (Ph.D. '08) was recently awarded the first endowed academic position at Holy Names University in Oakland, the Irene Woodward Endowed Professorship in Arts and Humanities. Park is assistant professor of Religious Studies and Philosophy.

Janko Zagar, O.P. died on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the age of 92 as the result of complications from a head trauma received during a recent fall. Fr. Janko was born in Croatia in 1921 and came to the U.S. after WWII. He was Professor Emeritus of Moral and Social Philosophy and Theology at the Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology.

We have received word of the death of Dr. Dody Donnelly, who taught at several schools in the GTU. She died in San Rafael on April 6, and there will be a memorial Mass for her on Friday, May 10 at 10.30 AM at the McLean Chapel on the campus of Holy Names University, 3500 Mountain Blvd. Oakland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Amnesty International www.amnestyusa.org.

In an April 3 announcement, President Donahue informed the GTU community of recent changes in leadership.
Maureen Maloney, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, currently on loan to the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), accepted a position as Vice President with WASC, having served the GTU for 18 years. Donahue commented that her selection was a "tremendous testimony to Maureen’s talent and professional leadership abilities."
