How Seminaries Are Adapting to New Realities

The handwriting is on the wall. As Americans distance themselves from the label of Christian, preferring “spiritual” or no affiliation, attendance continues to slip across mainline denominations. Schools for ministerial formation are struggling with lower enrollments and less denominational financial support. The composition of the Christian Church is changing and the seminaries must change with it.

Bernard Schlager Named New Dean of PSR

It was announced on Monday, June 3, 2013, that Bernard Schlager will succeed Tat-siong Benny Liew as Pacific School of Religion's Dean & Vice President for Academic Affairs. Schlager has been at PSR since 2000 where he is Associate Professor of Cultural and Historical Studies; he is also a member of the Core Doctoral Faculty at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU). In addition, he has been Executive Director of the Center for Lesbian & Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry (CLGS) for the last 5 years.

Riess Potterveld elected Acting President of the Graduate Theological Union

BERKELEY, CA – On May 17, the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) and Pacific School of Religion (PSR) informed their communities that Dr. Riess W. Potterveld, PSR President, will become Acting President of the GTU. PSR is one of the oldest members of the GTU, which is the largest consortium of seminaries and graduate schools in the country. Many of the schools are concentrated in an area north of UC Berkeley known as “Holy Hill.”
