Special Collections

Overview

Special Collections and Archives support the curriculum and preserve the records of the Graduate Theological Union. The collections are dedicated to diverse religious dialogue, the Christian and wider religious intellectual heritage, the American religious experience in the West, and the ministries and missions of the Member Schools and Institutes of the GTU.

Holdings

Rare books:  over 10,000 books and pamphlets
Archival and manuscript material: over 1300 linear feet

Hours

Monday-Friday 
Materials must be requested at least 30 minutes before closing time.
Rare Books: 9 am to 5 pm (submit request at circulation desk)
Archives:  8:30 am to 4 pm (submit request to archivist/special collections)

 

Technical Services and Collection Development

The Department as a whole is committed to the on-going development and maintenance of the various instructional and research collections (Exegesis, History, Liturgy, Practical Theology, Periodicals, Reference, etc.) that support the teaching, learning, and research activities associated with the disciplines of religion and theology undertaken in the academic and professional programs offered at the Graduate Theological Union.

Security Guard

A security guard is available in the evenings for those wanting an escort to their cars or back to their dorms.  Please contact the guard via the Circulation Desk in the Library either in person or by calling 510-649-2500.

 

The Radical Religion Collection

In 1973, the Berkeley Free Church which had operated in the South Campus area of Berkeley since 1967, closed its doors,  taking time to contemplate its future work.

The Elsie Thomas Culver Collection

  Elsie Culver  

During World War II, Elsie Thomas Culver (1898-1988), a graduate of the Pacific School of Religion and ordained a Congregational minister (1943), worked for the Church Committee on Overseas Relief and Reconstruction (which later became Church World Service under the National Council of Churches).
