IBS is pleased to announce a call for papers for the 3rd Annual Graduate Student Symposium at the Institute of Buddhist Studies.

A discussion of questions such as: How does one respond to a call for papers? What makes for an effective proposal? What should one include in a proposal & what should be left out?

Hockett named Executive Director of Community Action

Community Action of Ventura County (CAVC), an organization dedicated to addressing the effects of poverty in Ventura County, CA, has selected Timothy Hockett as its new Executive Director.

Hockett holds a B.A. degree from Columbia Christian College, an M.A. equivalent from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, and pursued doctoral studies at the Graduate Theological Union.

Statement on FST Announcement of Departure

The decision by the Franciscan School of Theology to affiliate with the University of San Diego and to move its campus to Southern California is an occasion to thank the Franciscans for the wonderful work they have done since they joined the GTU consortium in 1968. The presence of extremely talented faculty, staff, and students has contributed greatly to the intellectual and religious climate that has made the GTU one of the most distinctive centers of theological learning in the country. We will miss FST and the FST community greatly.

Uriah Kim Named Academic Dean at Hartford Seminary

Hartford Seminary President Heidi Hadsell announced Monday that The Rev. Dr. Uriah Kim, Associate Professor of Hebrew Bible, has been appointed to a three-year term as Academic Dean of Hartford Seminary.

Hadsell praised Kim for the dedication, skill and enthusiasm that he has brought to the position since he became interim dean in August. The new appointment is retroactive to July 1.

Alumna Peace First Professor of Interfaith Studies at Andover Newton

Jennifer Howe PeaceThe Andover Newton Board of Trustees voted unanimously to create the school's first tenure track faculty position in Interfaith Studies and named Dr. Jennifer Howe Peace as the incumbent.

Noel named 2012 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer

Rev. Dr. James Noel, the H. Eugene Farlough, Jr. Chair of African American Christianity and Professor of American Religion at SFTS, will deliver this year's Distinguished Faculty Lecture on November 8. His lecture is entitled “Black Religion in the Atlantic World during the Age of Revolution: Excavating the ‘Sublime.’”

Commencement 2012

The May 10 ceremonies at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary's Chapel of the Cross recognized 62 graduates who completed their degrees in Fall 2011 or Spring 2012. Thirty-six students graduated with a Master of Arts degree, five received a Master of Arts with a concentration in Biblical Languages, and twenty-one received the Doctor of Philosophy degree.
