2400 Ridge Road Berkeley, CA 94709

Please join the Richard S. Dinner Center for Jewish Studies and the Center for the Arts & Religion for an immersive experience of sacred mobility in Jewish ritual and diasporic contexts.

Scholar Francesco Spagnolo will teach us while we enjoy a light lunch in the temporary ritual dwelling of the Sukkah and then join exhibition co-curators Olga Yunak and Justin Grosnick in the Doug Adams Gallery to lead us in a tour of Sacred Mobility: The Travels of Hindu and Eastern Orthodox Holy Images.

Inspired by diasporic communities in the Bay Area, this comparative exhibition explores the movement of sacred objects. Material manifestations of the sacred—gods, saints, divinity—move across space and time not simply via physical transport but through reproduction of images and objects. This sacrality expands by way of transformation that relies on both artists who create these works and devotees who activate their meaning. These movements bridge distances, ensuring that the faithful maintain connections to the divine no matter how far they travel from their homes.
