Using technology to increase diverse student engagement

The article Diverse Students Go Digital, from last week's Chronicle of Higher Education, details the practical ways in which professor Shawn Francis Peters engages at-risk students through social media and the pedagogical reasons for his choices. His interdisciplinary courses at the University of Wisconsin at Madison focus on issues like justice, equality and culture, and he uses multimedia and social media tools to help students explore the material. One of his most interesting innovations is having students live tweet their responses as they watch an episode of The Wire, and then using the tweets as the basis for classroom discussion afterwards.
