Ancient Iconography in a New Context: Byzantine Monosandali and Their Monastic Audiences

Rossitza Schroeder, Associate Professor of Art and Religion, Pacific School of Religion

Late thirteenth to early fourteenth- century Byzantine churches contain images of military saints wearing only one shoe (monosandali). These figures are known from ancient mythology and primary sources, such as Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War. Dr. Schroeder will elaborate on the meaning of these half-shod military saints in medieval Greece. This particular iconography added a sense of instability and flux, creating a suitable environment for the contemplative practices of the monks meditating upon them.
