Space and Spirit: Mapping the Geography of Hasidism

Marcin Wodziński

Is it true that Hasidism dominated religious life among East European Jews by the end of the 18th century? What were the borders of Hasidic influence? When, how, and why did they change? Which Hasidic dynasties were strongest? What brought an end of Hasidism in Eastern Europe? How did Hasidism resurrect in the post-Holocaust world? How strong is it today?

These and other questions will be discussed in Dr. Wodziński’s presentation on the geography of this most important socio-religious movement in modern Judaism.

Marcin Wodziński was born and raised in Silesia, Poland. He currently directs the Taube Department of Jewish Studies, University of Wrocław, Poland. Of his recent publications, he is most proud of Historical Atlas of Hasidism (2018) and Hasidism: Key Questions (2018).

This event is cosponsored by Taube Philanthropies.
