WSR Cafe Series: John Endres, Rebecca’s Prayer In the Book of Jubilees

Monday, November 11th 2013, 10:00am

This presentation focuses attention on the characterization of women in one narrative text found among Second Temple Jewish pseudepigraphal works.  The author of Jubilees has given special attention to women characters known from the The Book of Genesis, which it retells. Betsy Halpern-Amaru has studied this phenomenon in her book, The Empowerment of Women in the Book of Jubilees (Brill, 1999) and I have examined a prayer of blessing for Jacob attributed to Rebecca (Jub 25:11-23).  It demonstrates the critical significance of Rebecca for this author and the prayer also encapsulates significant theological motifs in this prayer attributed to a woman.

Dr. Endres received his doctorate from Vanderbilt University and is a Professor of Sacred Scripture at the Jesuit School of Theology Santa Clara. Fr. Endres served as associate editor for the Catholic Biblical Quarterly; has co-authored A Retreat with Psalms: Resources for Personal and Communal Prayer (New York/Mahwah, N.J.: Paulist Press, 2001) and Chronicles and Its Synoptic Parallels in Samuel, Kings and Related Biblical Texts  (Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 1998); and has published numerous articles in theological publications.
