GTU Remembers Dr. John Endres, S.J.

BERKELEY, CA – January 31, 2022 – The Graduate Theological Union mourns the passing of Dr. John Endres, S.J., Professor Emeritus of Sacred Scripture at the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University, where he taught since 1982. A passionate advocate for ecumenical instruction, Endres taught courses in Psalms, Wisdom, and Deuterocanonical Books, Intertestamental Literature, and the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Fr. Endres received his PhD from Vanderbilt University (1982), his MDiv from Weston School of Theology (1977), and his AB from College of the Holy Cross (’68). His professional accomplishments include memberships in several associations and committees, among them: the Catholic Biblical Association, Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality and Society of Biblical Literature. Also active in literary pursuits, Fr. Endres served as associate editor for the Catholic Biblical Quarterly from 1993-2000; co-authored A Retreat with Psalms: Resources for Personal and Communal Prayer (New York/Mahwah, N.J.: Paulist Press, 2001); Chronicles and Its Synoptic Parallels in Samuel, Kings and Related Biblical Texts (Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 1998); and has published numerous articles in theological publications. Prior to the pandemic, Fr. Endres led study tours and pilgrimages for his students to Turkey and Israel.

Fr. Endres’ funeral will take place at 10 am on February 19, at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2005 Berryman St, in Berkeley. This service will be livestreamed at: https://youtube.com/c/StMaryMagdalenChurch and https://www.facebook.com/SaintMaryMagdalenParish/.

A simple reception will follow on the terrace at Chardin House (2621 Ridge Road, Berkeley). Concelebrants who have faculties in the Diocese of Oakland or who will have submitted a request for a letter of good standing are welcome.
