New Religions @ the GTU: Theories, Practices, Peoples

The students in the New Religious Movements concentration are excited to host a conference at the Graduate Theological Union focusing on the study of New Religions. Speakers will explore themes including but not limited to: innovation and creativity within established traditions; authority and authenticity in new religions, appropriation as a transcultural practice and its criticisms; the encounter between new religions and science; and new religions in the post secular age. Dr. Andrea Jain, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Indiana University, will give the keynote address. A reception honoring Dr. Jacob Needleman, Professor of Philosophy at San Francisco State University and former Director of the Center for the Study of New Religions at the GTU (1977-1983), will follow.
